Negative Impact Of Social Media
The use of internet has become a really addictive thing in today’s world. Generations have come to become so addictive with the social media and internet everywhere that they have actually forgotten the actual means of communication. Teenagers and young adults are the most fanatic users of these sites, so it is quite inevitable to ignore that in today’s society social media plays an essential role in most teenagers and young adults’ lives. Many people tend to spend most of their time on these popular media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, MySpace, tumblr and many more. Because everything in this world has advantages and disadvantages, social networking sites could be dangerous. It might be dangerous because it could have negative impact on people who use it. Being addicted to social networking sites could be bad for our health or our personality. Although social media has a lot of advantages, some people are addicted to social media, which can negatively impact a person’s personality because it reduces the physical connection between a person and the people around him, and it could force the users to be performers.
Social media sites have a lot of advantages in our life because it makes the communication between the people easier. People use social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and My space to communicate with each other easier and faster. Social media sites also help people from different countries to communicate with each other. From my own experience, I use Instagram every day to communicate with my family and friends because they live in Kuwait, so social media sites help me to keep in touch with them all the time. I can post anything over there and I know that my followers will like my picture that is a way of acknowledging it. Social networking provides an awesome way to communicate because it makes the planet as a small village. Social media really has a lot of benefits, which can help people to communicate with each other. At the same time it has negative impacts as well as mentioned in the article titled, “The Negative Effect of Social Media on Society and Individuals” talks about how social media is having a negative impact on people’s lives, “The immediacy provided by social media is available to predators as well as friends. Kids especially are vulnerable to the practice of cyber-bullying in which the perpetrators, anonymously or even posing as people their victims trust, terrorize individuals in front of their peers” (Jung). This explains how social media can have a negative impact on people’s lives.
On the other hand, social networking could affect how people physically relate with their friends and family. Social networking sites could reduce the physical connection between a person and his/her friends and family. People cannot deny the fact that advancement of technology has completely changed the methods of interaction and communication. Today more people are interacting with others through different platforms like apps, role-playing online games, social networks, etc. Robin Dunbar on his article “You Gotta have (150) Friends” claims that the number of friends that someone has on Facebook is not the same as the number that he has in real life. Consequently, some people might think that they have a lot of friends, but the fact is that they aren’t real friends (Dunbar 45). People need to be physically connected with each other. Technology help people to be connected online with each other, but it don’t help them to be physically connected to each other. People need to be connected with their friends and families emotionally and psychologically and this is what social networking doesn’t do. When someone has a lot of friends online, he might be addicted to it and his physical connection with his real friends might be decreased. Because of this, they do not know how to interact physically with people when they meet them or what gesture they should exhibit. For example, friends meeting up for lunch dates tend to spend more of the time on their phones rather than catching up as friends because they only know how to interact on social media. From my own experience, my friend was addicted in social networking sites. He spends almost more than five hours using social networking sites. Three months after he got married, her wife asked him for a divorce because he spent a lot of time using Facebook. By spending so much time on social networking sites, people could lose the physical connection with their friends and families.
Social media also could force us to be performers, so it affects in a negative way on the users personalities. Some Facebook users try to post false things about themselves to get other people attention, or to have more likes on their pages. In Kate Beals’ ‘Faceless on Facebook,’ she fails to fill her profile because she fears how people might judge her (Beals 48). It brings forth the same idea that everyone is somehow conscious of what is likely to happen to them if they decide to be free-style on Facebook. Some social media users consider the number of the likes they get on their page as a mirror of their personalities, so they try to make it more attractive and more beautiful. Social networking sites users care about how the first impression that their profiles give to the other people. In indirect way, some social networking users become performers because they might post false information about themselves. On my Twitter account, some of my friends post false things about their selves, and they told me that they do that to have more followers on their pages. Social media could effect on people personalities by forcing them to be performers.
Despite having a lot of benefits, using social media with no limits could have negative aspects on people personalities because it could affect how people physically interact with the people around them, and it could force them to be performers. It is not bad for one to use social sites to interact with others but with moderation, it can be a great way to keep in touch with friends and family. People do need to find a particular solution, which can help them to use social media in moderate way. One of the solutions is to make a schedule, which can help people to limit the time that they spend on social media sites.
